As many of you know, I play the Autoharp. I love the instrument and the way it lets me easily transpose a song from one key to another. I have also played guitar and understand all too well that it isn't that easy to accomplish key changes on that instrument. What I have tried to do here is give you a basic chart that tells the most basic chords in a key, and how to change them to another - either to play along with someone else or to find the right range to sing in.
The second chart shows how a basic chord is changed by using a capo on the first five frets of a guitar. That way, if you already know the chords for a song that uses the basic chords in the key of C (like in the first chart), but the person you are playing with needs to play in the key of D, you will see that you need to put the capo on the second fret.
Hope this helps (and doesn't confuse)

Transposing Chords
This is just a simple chart that may help
you transpose chords to play a tune in the best key.
Key./ Chord 1 | Chord 2 | Chord 3 (7th) | Chord 4 (Minor) |
C | F | G | Am |
D | G | A | Bm |
E | A | B | Cm |
F | Bb | C | Dm |
G | C | D | Em |
A | D | E | F#m |
B | E | F# | G#m |
And another to help figure out what the
resulting key is at various capo positions on a guitar:
Chord | Capo at Fret 1 | Fret 2 | Fret 3 | Fret 4 | Fret 5 |
C | C# | D | D#/Eb | E | F |
D | D#/Eb | E | F | F# | G |
E | F | F#/Gb | G | G#Ab | A |
F | F#/Gb | G | G#/Ab | A | A#/Bb |
G | G#/Ab | A | A#/Bb | B | C |
A | A#/Bb | B | C | C#/Db | D |
B | C | C#/Db | D | D#/Eb | E |
