Glencoe
On the murder of Glencoe Febr 1692 The highland MacDonalds were solidly Catholic, and the protestant King William who had replaced King James on the Scottish throne ordered the Campbells to rid him of the MacDonald clan. The Campbells actually stayed in the house for about two weeks, until the orders arrived from the King. See more on “Ye Jacobites By Name.”Chorus:
C F C
Oh, cruel was the snow that sweeps Glencoe
G(7)
And covers the grave o' Donald

Oh, cruel was the foe that raped Glencoe

And murdered the house of MacDonaldC F C
1. They came in a blizzard, we offered them heat
G C G(7)
A roof for their heads, dry shoes for their feet
C F C Am
We wined them and dined them, they ate of our meat
F G C
And they slept in the house of MacDonaldC F C
2. They came from Fort William with murder in mind
G C G(7)
The Campbell had orders King William had signed
C F C Am
"Put all to the sword"- these words underlined
F G C
"And leave none alive called MacDonald"
C F C
3. They came in the night when the men were asleep
G C G(7)
This band of Argyles, through snow soft and deep
C F C Am
Like murdering foxes amongst helpless sheep
F G C
They slaughtered the house of MacDonaldC F C
4. Some died in their beds at the hand of the foe
G C G(7)
Some fled in the night and were lost in the snow
C F C Am
Some lived to accuse him who struck the first blow
F G C
But gone was the house of MacDonald
