Ce Fut en Mai (It was in May)
English Version
C G
In early May, when skies are gay
F G C
And green the plains and mountains,
C G
At break of day I rose to play
F G C
Beside a little fountain.
G F C
In garden close where shone the rose
C F G
I heard a fiddle played, then
G F C
A handsome knight that charmed my sight,
F G C
Was dancing with a maiden.C G
Both fair of face, they turned with grace
F G C
To tread their May-time measure.
C G
The flowering place, their close embrace,
F G C
Their kisses brought them pleasure.
G F C
But shortly they had slipped away
C F G
To stroll among the bowers.
G F C
To ease their heart, each played his part
F G C
In love's games on the flowers.C G
I crept ahead, all chill with dread,
F G C
Lest someone there should see me.
C G
Bemused and sad because I had
F G C
No joy in love to please me.
G F C
Then one of those I'd seen there rose
C F G
And from afar off speaking,
G F C
He questioned me, who I might be,
F G C
And what I came there seeking.C G
I stepped their way to sadly say
F G C
How long I'd loved a lady,
C G
Who all my days my heart obeys,
F G C
Full faithfully and steady.
G F C
Though still I bore a grief so sore
C F G
In losing one so lovely,
G F C
That surely I would come to die
F G C
Unless she deigned to love me.C G
With wisdom rare, with tactful air
F G C
They counseled and relieved me.
C G
They said their prayer was God might spare
F G C
Some joy in love that grieved me.
G F C
Where all my gain was loss and pain
C F G
So I in turn extended
G F C
My thanks sincere, with many a tear,
F G C
And them to God commended.
