Niniane's Call    wav file  Real Audio file

Words & music © 1999 Ginger Hulsopple  This was written in response to a request from Lord Merlin of Excalibur Faire in Smithville, Texas.  There are many stories of Merlin the Magician, and Niniane is addressed in different ways.  Sometimes she is good and sometimes she is characterized as evil.  This is the way I prefer to see her.  It is one of my favorite stories... don't fuss at me for deviations from the legend... I claim "poetic licence"!!!   It is good to be the Bard!

Chorus:
Am                              G
Friend of Pendragon, Guardian of the Land
Am                                              C                  E7
Counselor of Britain's King and Student of Anand
       C                            G                     Am                              E7
Between the man and wizard, prithee where does your heart lie?
Am                       C   Dm                  Am           Em   Am
Hear ye not fair Niniane's call...     quoth the ravens as they fly.

                 Am                  G                         Am                 G  Am
1.  Young Merlin lived in wilder wood and came to know it well    ("wilder" has a short "i")
     Am                           C                           G                              Em
Of bird and beast and plant and rock, he learned all bright and fell
        Am                                G                   Am                E7
The Old Ones watched him as he grew to fill a druid's shoes
        Am                  G    Am                           C           G          Am
And sheltered him un  -  til he must 'tween love and magic choose.    Chorus

2.  And as he grew he came to know the language and the tales
Of realms beyond the mortal plane - to see beyond the veil
To walk the Paths of Power in the earth and sea and skies
Till one day he found love within the light of a maiden's eyes.    Chorus

3.  Fair Niniane was born into the magic of the Earth
They say a star began to shine, a herald of her birth
She knew well the healing arts, but not the ways of men
Until she met young Merlin there in Tintagel's fair glen.    Chorus

4.  Now when the love-touched wizard returned unto his cave
The Elder Ones did gather 'round, his power for to save
For mortal love he must not know - by destiny profound
And thus it was that Merlin's heart with loneliness was bound.     Chorus

5.  Oh, time strode on as deeds became the Legend and the Song
Of Arthur and of Britain and the wizard who stood long
And at the last as Morgan sought to strike a fatal blow
Fair Niniane cast out one last spell......  true love at last they'd know.     Chorus

6.  Now the Druid and his Lady live together in the Wood
The magic of their love against the evil strongly stood
Forever they must stay within the crystal circle cast
Until the day when Merlin's power, its magic can surpass.     Chorus
